We know that cosmetics companies charge outrageous markups for simple moisturizers and foundations, and that the mass production requires enough artificial stabilizers, emulsifiers and preservatives to make the high-priced products less effective than home-made versions.
This moisturizer is delicate enough to use on the face, and wonderful as a body lotion as well. I sometimes make 2 versions, by adding 4 oz. of Rose Water for a facial version that is a bit lighter than the original, 3-ingredient recipe.
So, without further adieu, I present my recipe for 3-Ingredient Facial Moisturizer, with links to ingredients:

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 2 tablespoons organic coconut oil (extra-virgin), or Almond Oil (my preference)
- 15-20 drops essential oils (I use Lavender and Tee Tree, but please choose your preference.)
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients to a large glass bowl with high sides. You won’t be able to mix them together yet, as they’ll be solid.
- Bring 2 cups of water to a simmer in a sauce pan. Once water is simmering, add the glass bowl filled with ingredients, to make a double-boiler (make sure no water gets into the bowl). Stir occasionally.
- Once the mixture is melted and combined, remove the glass bowl from the water and pour the mixture in a glass jar . Allow the mixture to cool.
- Once the mixture has cooled, place in the refrigerator until it solidifies completely. Remove and store at room temperature.
- To use, apply a pea-sized amount of moisturizer to clean skin.
This recipe will last for 6 months of twice-daily moisturizing.
Tip: To create a version of this emollient moisturizer that has higher water content and less oil (an ‘active moist’ version), gently stir in 4 ounces (or more, to your liking) of Rose Water until emulsified.
